HISTORICAL

The establishment of the gallery is in conjunction with the success of Johor Bahru City Council (Majlis Bandaraya Johor Bahru) in achieving a ‘FOUR STAR’ - Star Rating System by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government in 2009. The gallery is also supported by the Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA) under the Tanjung Puteri Tourism Programme. Informations on the history and development of Johor Bahru City and Johor Bahru City Council itself are readily available here.

FUNCTIONS

  • Exhibits collections on the informations and artifacts of historical and heritable value of the Johor Bahru City Council.
  • Easy access for the public and those interested in getting informations about Johor Bahru and Johor Bahru City Council as the Local Authority which have been empowered to carry out its responsibilities in administrating, planning and developing Johor Bahru City.
  • Increase the sense of belonging and esprit de corp towards Johor Bahru city.
  • Acts as an attraction for public to visit the Johor Tourist Information Center (JOTIC) building and further enhance the development of tourism sector in the city of Johor Bahru.

HISTORY OF JOHOR BAHRU

This section is dedicated to the history of the foundation of Bandar Iskandar Puteri (the ancient name for Johor Bahru) by Temenggung Daeng Ibrahim on 10th Mac 1855. Various names were given to Johor which was believed to have originated from the Arabic word ‘Jauhar’ meaning precious gemstone, ‘wurawari’ (or wawamari) which means ‘clear water’ and even Ujung Tanah or Hujung Madini.

Exhibited are also Biodata of the Sultans and Great State leaders who were responsible for the successful development of Johor.

Informations on historical and heritage buildings that still exist today helps to bring back the nostalgic development of Johor Bahru City with its multiracial and cultured population.

the ‘0 KILOMETER’ mile marker or mile post that marks the beginning of your journey from the southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia to the north and east is situated at Jalan Ibrahim, Johor Bahru, opposite the Johor Bahru City Council building?

The strategic location of Johor Bahru City at the most southern tip of Peninsular Malaysia and the Asian Continent is a significance to this capital city of Johor for being the starting point or reference to a particular destination throughout the country.

Johor Bahru is also the main linkage between Malaysia and Singapore since the opening of the Johor Causeway in 1924.

Exhibits here includes landmarks and other unique features of Johor Bahru.

JOHOR BAHRU, NOW AND THEN

Brings back the memory of Johor Bahru panorama way back in the 1950s and the present scenery of what Johor Bahru looks like. You can still witnessed much of the architectural heritage still surviving in this city till today.

JBCC, YOUR LOCAL COUNCIL

The development history started in 1910 when the Town Board was established and upgraded to the Town Board Department in the year 1933. Later, in 1950 the administration changed to Town Council and Municipal Council in 1977 followed by further upgrading to Johor Bahru City Council on 1st January 1994.

Being the Local Authority, Johor Bahru City Council is trying its upmost best in providing town services to the Johor Bahru community. This section also displays collections of trophies, souveniers and old office equipments.

Exhibits the on-going development of Johor Bahru and activities by the Johor Bahru multiracial communities based on the spirit of harmony.

The Johor Bahru visitor centre is a one-stop centre for local and foreign visitors to get a better understanding on Johor Bahru. Printed materials like free brochures and free pamphlets are available here.
